The full scores are manuscript, with German text. One score carries the name of W. Kreitz. The vocal scores include two French editions, by Heugel (1865, pl. no. H. 4662) and Gérard (1865, pl. no. C.M. 10,370); one German edition by Bote and Bock (1885?, pl. no. 12937), which includes French text; and one German manuscript vocal score, which is apparently incomplete. The orchestra parts are manuscript, in three sets. The vocal parts are manuscript, in German. Several bear performers' names, and one carries the indication "New York '86/'87." The promptbooks include four typed books in English and two manuscript books in German. One German promptbook carries the date 6/11/87. The dialogue parts include twenty typed parts, in English, comprising five sets, and three sets of German manuscript parts. All of the German parts carry performers' names. One set of three parts carries the stamp of W. Kreitz and one set of four parts the label of Otto Laenger.

Jacques Offenbach (1819–1880) was a German-born French composer and cellist of Jewish ancestry. He had a strong influence in popular music in Europe, and was one of the originators of the operetta, of which he wrote more than one hundred. His works were noted for their elements of satire and parody; two for which he is particularly known are the operetta Orpheus in the Underworld and the opera The Tales of Hoffman .
